Smell, it’s incredibly powerful! Just think for a moment about the last thing you smelled. Was is a good smell or a bad smell? Either way smell impacts your limbic system which is your emotional center in the brain. Pretty cool, huh?
Sometimes smells can promote negative emotions such as a war veteran smelling gun powder. Smells can also promote positive emotions. When I was a kid we would go to my great grandparents lake home. My great-grandpa would make pancakes in the morning. He would stir fresh maple syrup on the stove. The smell would permeate the entire house. I loved waking up to that smell, it was the smell of love and care. Now when I smell maple syrup I automatically think of him stirring syrup in their little pink kitchen. Smell is incredibly powerful!
What does this mean for this article? It means that we have something very powerful right in the palm of our hands that play an important role in our emotions, essential oils. In my practice I capitalize on the power of smell. From passively influencing the limbic system in my lobby by diffusing essential oils (typically with an uplifting citrus smell) to using certain smells as grounding methods in EMDR trauma treatment .
The uses of essential oils are many! From diffusing, to applying them on your skin to using them for cooking, cleaning. They can also be very important when moving toward a chemical free household.
